Nordic Kayaks Squall 540

Medium-volume 49cm fitness hull with a pronounced side cutout at the catch, so effective paddling width feels narrower than the beam suggests. Balanced primary and secondary stability aimed at fitness paddlers stepping up toward race skis. The 5.40m short-cockpit hull suits smaller and lighter paddlers; the 5.80m Squall 580 is the long-cockpit sibling.

Both scores are rated at the hull's own design weight. How these are derived.

Nordic calls the Squall 'a stable fitness ski, fast and fun' with 'exceptional balance between stability and speed'; 49cm beam with a cutout for a clean catch places it in the intermediate fitness band (nordickayaks.com).

Suits: Fitness paddling, flatwater to moderate ocean chop, downwind runs for lighter paddlers

Paddler weight

This hull is built around a paddler of about 85 kg. It stays workable from 75 kg to 90 kg, and sits at its best between 79 kg and 87 kg.

Derived from published hull dimensions and calibrated against manufacturer paddler limits, not taken from a marketing range. The method, in full.

Generations

~2019-present

Short-cockpit (540) variant of the Squall fitness platform for paddlers ~155-195cm / 50-85kg; the 580 is the long-cockpit sibling.

What works, and what it costs you

What works

  • Strong stability-to-speed balance for a fitness ski
  • Side cutout gives a clean, narrow-feeling catch at 49cm beam
  • Short 540 cockpit fits smaller/lighter paddlers well

Trade-offs

  • Carbon-only pricing is steep for an intermediate ski
  • Less stable than wide beginner skis like the Exrcize
  • Thin second-hand market in Australia

What paddlers say

Nordic Kayaks copy: the Squall is 'a stable fitness ski, fast and fun with great responsiveness in waves', and the side cutout lets you paddle 'with speed' despite the 49cm width (nordickayaks.com).Reported experience
