Nelo 540
Low-volume hull with a distinctive concavity (bump-out) at the footwell, soft chine, and more rocker at bow and stern than the 510/520. Nelo describes the design as reducing wetted surface and moving the pivot point forward for sharper turning while lowering the seat for a lower centre of gravity.

Launched 2020 as a new model between the 520 and 550 - did not exist in earlier Nelo ranges. Debuted with the 2020 'new design' hull (concave footwell bump-out, soft chine, low-volume bow/stern with more rocker). Constructions SCS (11kg) and WWR (12.5kg).
Same 5.4m x 0.50m dimensions and Stability-6 rating, current catalog name '54'. Constructions AIR (11kg) and WWR (12.5kg). Adds a redesigned deeper-comfort seat and Venturi self-draining system.

What works
- Superb, well-padded ergonomic seating that fits a wide range of paddler sizes
- Stability close to the 520 but noticeably more speed and glide
- Shorter length (5.4m) is easy to store, transport and car-top
- Quick to accelerate onto waves; reviewer says it exceeded speed expectations in races and downwind runs
Trade-offs
- No side handles standard (must retrofit a kit or grip tape)
- Front end can move around in choppier downwind if foot pedals aren't evenly set - less forgiving of small rigging errors than the 510/520
- Fewer used listings than 510/520 given it's a newer, lower-volume model
- Sits between two other Nelo models (520/550), making it a confusing choice for some buyers
