Huki S1-X Special

6.40m x 43.2cm race hull on the S1-X footprint with extra fore-body volume: a steep ridged fore deck, a lowered bow stem, a sharp V in the fore hull and a fuller aft section, all aimed at shedding water and resisting pearling in steep wind chop. Waterline 6.32m x 39.6cm under an 82kg paddler (maker figure). Weights are Huki's quoted ranges with a 4in rudder; the record uses the midpoint of each.

Stability

Dimension estimateLow confidence
Speed

Modelled from published beam, length and deck height. Low confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight. How we rate.

Stability here means how steady the ski feels sitting still on flat water. Where two craft have overlapping ranges, we can't say which is more stable. Downwind handling is a separate thing, covered in the evidence note below.

Evidence note

This band is estimated from published dimensions. Qualitative context includes 3 paddler reports and 4 linked sources.

Suits: Big downwind and open-ocean conditions with steep, short wind chop, where the extra bow volume pays off.

Paddler weight

The estimated sweet spot is 78–91 kg, with a broader estimated guide of 64–95 kg. This estimate is a guide, not a limit. Seat fit, conditions and paddling style matter. Lighter paddlers can still enjoy a larger hull, especially downwind. A test paddle is the best check.

Estimated from hull dimensions using a formula fitted to makers’ own paddler limits. It does not establish the designer’s intended paddler weight. How this is worked out.

Generations

~2007-2011

First S1-X Special, a higher-volume S1-X for big water; owners refer to a 2007 model.

2012-present

Redesigned 2012 with a steeper fore-deck crown, lower bow stem, sharp V in the fore hull, narrower bevelled catch zone, lower seat sides and a new rudder line. Custom built to order in Sacramento, California.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Extra bow volume makes it hard to pearl in steep chop
  • Light, from about 10kg in carbon/Kevlar
  • Solid secondary stability for a 43cm ski

Cons

  • 43cm beam still needs advanced balance
  • Built to order in California only; import to Australia
  • Same footprint as the S1-X makes the choice between them unclear from specs alone

What paddlers say

Mike McNulty (testimonial on huki.com): 'Dramatically better surfing - the rudder really sticks to the wave and the bow has much less tendency to dive.'Reported experience
Larry Goolsby (testimonial on huki.com): 'This boat felt like the R in big water only it was way faster.'Reported experience
Wesley Echols (surfskiracing.org, 2014): reviewed the S1-X Special as 'Big FUN', a light, well-built, confidence-inspiring race ski.Reported experience
