On-water profile

Stability
2.0
Speed
9.0

Both scores are rated at the hull's own design weight. How these are derived.

A decked racing K1, rated against the Nelo Vipers that share this category rather than against the skis: 5 cm narrower than the Viper 46, which is rated 3 for stability and 9 for speed here. It is listed because Carbonology builds it and buyers cross-shop it against the range, not because it is a surfski — it is not, and it needs a spray deck.

Suits: Flatwater racing and marathon, river racing in the down-river build. Not an ocean craft.

Paddler weight

This hull is built around a paddler of about 100 kg. It stays workable from 88 kg to 106 kg, and sits at its best between 93 kg and 102 kg.

Derived from published hull dimensions and calibrated against manufacturer paddler limits, not taken from a marketing range. The method, in full.

Generations

2017-

Gained visibility after the 2017 ICF World Canoe Marathon Championships in Pietermaritzburg; in 2018 Hank McGregor paddled a carbon/bamboo Ultra to a 39:00 flat 10 km time trial in South Africa.

What works, and what it costs you

What works

  • Race-proven at ICF marathon level
  • Under-stern rudder with a countersunk housing
  • Down-river build available off the same hull

Trade-offs

  • Not a surfski: needs a spray deck and will swamp without one
  • Australian Paddle Sports lists 42 cm beam against the factory’s 41 cm
  • Weight class is quoted differently by maker (75-100 kg) and dealer (60-100 kg)
