Mazu (Elio) Pro Elite

6.0m x 43.5cm race hull, the longest and narrowest Mazu. Short by elite standards, which is the brand's stated position: less waterline, less weight, more willingness to turn onto a run.

Both scores are rated at the hull's own design weight. How these are derived.

Rated from beam and length against the index scale rather than from a paddle test. 43.5cm at 6m. Mazu hulls run short for their class, so the speed rating is pulled down relative to a same-beam boat with a longer waterline. The surfski.info community chart lists an earlier Pro Elite at 43cm x 6.2m; the figures here are the current ones from Elio and its distributors.

Suits: Ocean racing and downwind for a paddler who prefers a short, lively hull.

Paddler weight

This hull is built around a paddler of about 83 kg. It stays workable from 73 kg to 88 kg, and sits at its best between 77 kg and 85 kg.

Derived from published hull dimensions and calibrated against manufacturer paddler limits, not taken from a marketing range. The method, in full.

Generations

2016-present

Mazu is the surfski line of Elio Kayaks of Oporto, Portugal, who have built sprint and marathon K1s since the 1970s. The skis are shorter and lighter than most of the market by design, aimed at manoeuvring through waves rather than at flat-water top speed.

What works, and what it costs you

What works

  • Elite beam with a shorter, more manoeuvrable waterline than the 6.4m field
  • Light published layup from 10kg
  • K1 factory behind the construction

Trade-offs

  • 6.0m gives away flat-water speed to 6.4m elite rivals
  • Weight range of 10-14kg spans a lot of layups
  • No published price

What paddlers say

Discussed on surfski.info as a light, short, manoeuvrable alternative to the mainstream 6.4m hulls; the K1 pedigree of the Elio factory is the recurring point in its favour.Reported experience
