Both scores are rated at the hull's own design weight. How these are derived.

Rated from beam and length against the index scale rather than from a paddle test. 55cm at 5m. Mazu hulls run short for their class, so the speed rating is pulled down relative to a same-beam boat with a longer waterline. The community chart lists an Elio 55 at 55cm x 5.2m; the figures here are Elio's own.

Suits: Flat water, sheltered coast and first sessions.

Paddler weight

This hull is built around a paddler of about 87 kg. It stays workable from 77 kg to 93 kg, and sits at its best between 81 kg and 89 kg.

Derived from published hull dimensions and calibrated against manufacturer paddler limits, not taken from a marketing range. The method, in full.

Generations

2016-present

Mazu is the surfski line of Elio Kayaks of Oporto, Portugal, who have built sprint and marathon K1s since the 1970s. The skis are shorter and lighter than most of the market by design, aimed at manoeuvring through waves rather than at flat-water top speed.

What works, and what it costs you

What works

  • Very stable platform for a first surfski
  • Short enough to car-top and carry without help
  • Composite construction rather than plastic at this end of the market

Trade-offs

  • 5.0m x 55cm is slow next to anything raceable
  • Heaviest layups in the Mazu range
  • No published price

What paddlers say

Discussed on surfski.info as a light, short, manoeuvrable alternative to the mainstream 6.4m hulls; the K1 pedigree of the Elio factory is the recurring point in its favour.Reported experience
