Carbonology Zest X Double

A 7.25 m x 50 cm double on a 38 cm deck, two centimetres narrower and slightly longer than the Boost X double. Buckets are 42.5 cm wide and 20 cm deep. The ergonomic changes over the Boost double are aimed at letting a crew hold technique and run waves rather than simply stay upright.

Stability
6.5
Speed
8.0

Both scores are rated at the hull's own design weight. How these are derived.

Carbonology scores it 7 on its own 1-10 scale, three steps less stable than the Boost X double at 4 and two clear of the Flash X double at 9; Australian Paddle Sports rates it 3/5. Two centimetres of beam and a slightly longer waterline over the Boost double is a meaningful step up in speed and down in forgiveness, which is how the two are positioned against each other. No independent review exists.

Suits: Ocean racing and downwind for a competent crew who want a fast double without committing to the 46 cm Flash X.

Paddler weight

This hull is built around a paddler of about 90 kg per seat. It stays workable from 79 kg to 95 kg, and sits at its best between 84 kg and 92 kg.

Derived from published hull dimensions and calibrated against manufacturer paddler limits, not taken from a marketing range. The method, in full.

Generations

2023-

The intermediate double in the X range, introduced alongside the Cruze X RT and Flash X LV as one of the "new arrivals" in the 2023 catalogue.

What works, and what it costs you

What works

  • Real step up in speed over the Boost X double for A$0 more at the base layup
  • Deeper layup ladder than the other doubles, down to 16 kg
  • Still forgiving enough for a mixed-ability crew who can brace

Trade-offs

  • 7.25 m and 50 cm asks more of the back crew than the Boost double
  • Longest hull in the range to store and transport
  • No published review or owner report
