Carbonology Swift X / Glide X (OC1)

A 6.37 m x 39 cm outrigger canoe hull on a 30 cm deck, with a 2.7 m x 16 cm ama on 30 mm anodised aluminium iakos. The rear iako has five spring-loaded height settings so the ama’s lateral inclination can be set for the paddler’s weight and skill. Dual venturi bullet bailers; rudder cables are braided spectra outside and swaged stainless inside.

Stability
8.0
Speed
6.5

Both scores are rated at the hull's own design weight. How these are derived.

Rated as an outrigger, where the ama does the stability work and the hull’s own beam does not mean what it means on a ski — the same reason the Kai Wa’a and ChalupSki outriggers here sit at 8. Carbonology scores it 6 on its own 1-10 surfski scale and rates it for all paddler weights. Speed is set with the ChalupSki Gorge rather than the racing Kai Wa’a hulls: this is the value OC1 in the range, not a podium boat.

Suits: Ocean paddling and OC1 racing in varying conditions, including rough water. AOCRA-approved for Australian outrigger racing.

Paddler weight

This hull is built around a paddler of about 83 kg. It stays workable from 73 kg to 88 kg, and sits at its best between 77 kg and 84 kg.

Derived from published hull dimensions and calibrated against manufacturer paddler limits, not taken from a marketing range. The method, in full.

Generations

2017-

Swift OC1, built because there was no economically priced OC1 on the market. AOCRA-approved.

2025-

Glide X: same hull and ama, refined fittings — velcro-adjustable foam seat instead of the rail, and identical front and rear iako poles so assembly stops being handed.

What works, and what it costs you

What works

  • Priced well under the specialist OC1 brands
  • Five-position ama height adjustment, tool-assisted iako removal
  • AOCRA-approved, so it is race-legal in Australia

Trade-offs

  • Positioned on value rather than outright speed
  • Glass build is heavy for an OC1 at 14.5 kg hull-only
  • The Glide X changes fittings only — do not expect a new hull
