Carbonology Surf X Pro

A 5.8 m x 48 cm surf-racing hull with a high 38 cm deck and a shallow 17.5 cm bucket, built to Lifesaving South Africa’s spec-ski stipulations. Rocker and volume forward are there to punch through a break and stop the nose pearling on a steep wave rather than to hold a waterline. Double bullet bailers, single easy-adjust footwell, multiple neoprene handles.

Same 5.79-5.8 m x 48 cm footprint as the Icon Hydrus Elite, which is rated 6.5/7 here, and Carbonology scores it 6 on its own 1-10 scale — mid-range, steadier than its racing skis. Australian Paddle Sports gives it 3/5. The speed rating is for what it is built to do; a spec hull with that much rocker gives up flatwater glide, which is what the one third-party report of it says.

Suits: Surf-lifesaving racing, break-through starts and shore-break surfing. Usable in confused chop; a poor choice for flatwater distance.
