## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability band 5–8 out of 10 (editorial estimate, low confidence).
- Speed rated 6 out of 10.

Our estimate from published descriptions and reviews. Low confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is a cautious editorial estimate; it is not backed by a hull trace. Qualitative context includes 3 paddler reports and 5 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Estimated sweet spot 81–94 kg, broader estimated guide 66–98 kg. An estimate from hull dimensions, not the designer's intended weight.

## Suits
Flatwater fitness/marathon training with headroom into light-to-moderate chop; one long-time US Gulf Coast paddler reported using it in open-water conditions with a larger rudder, though this is not how Nelo positions the boat.

## Hull
Same classic-touring-model volume distribution as the 51 but 4cm wider, giving it noticeably more secondary stability at a modest speed cost. Nelo pitches it explicitly as the better-compromise boat for non-experienced paddlers wanting speed without giving up much stability.

## What works
- Most forgiving of the four widths - best pick for a genuine beginner-to-intermediate K1 trainer
- Still built to full Nelo race-boat fitting/finish standard
- Good secondary stability headroom reported anecdotally in mild chop

## Trade-offs
- Slowest of the four Viper widths covered here - a real pace trade-off vs the 46/48/51
- Still a K1, not a self-rescuing surfski - capsize means a swim
- Widest catch angle of the range, less efficient stroke mechanics for advanced paddlers

## Generations
- pre-2012-present: Confirmed in production by at least 2012 (surfski.info thread 'Nelo Viper 55 and Epic V8', Aug 2012); marketed as an intermediate model sitting between the fast 51 and the maximum-stability wider fitness kayaks.
- ~2020: Facebook/dealer posts reference a 'Viper 55 surfski kayak re-issue' with a lighter build (~8.5kg claimed) - a construction refresh, core hull shape unchanged.

## What paddlers say
- "I have used both the V-8 and the NELO Viper 55 on the flat and on Gulf of Mexico runs both large and small... The Nelo 55 works better at 28lb [ballast] than some 19 and 21ft skis I have had." - surfski.info forum, 'Nelo Viper 55 and Epic V8', Aug 2012
- "If you wanted something comparable to your Eze, you may want to consider a Viper 55, as it's probably closer overall than the 51." - mckengmsurfski, surfski.info forum, 2017
- "NELO VIPER 55 K1 - Excellent beginners kayak due to 55cm width... Good condition." - Perth WA Facebook Marketplace listing, paraphrased
