## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability band 4–7 out of 10 (editorial estimate, low confidence).
- Speed rated 7 out of 10.

Our estimate from published descriptions and reviews. Low confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is a cautious editorial estimate; it is not backed by a hull trace. Qualitative context includes 3 paddler reports and 5 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Estimated sweet spot 75–87 kg, broader estimated guide 61–91 kg. An estimate from hull dimensions, not the designer's intended weight.

## Suits
Flatwater marathon/fitness training; capable in light chop but designed for calm to moderately protected water, not surf or open ocean swell.

## Hull
Classic-touring-model volume in a 5.2m x 0.51m hull, meeting the Danish rules for excursion/touring kayaks. Nelo positions it as the most traditional, best-balanced Viper - long-time paddlers describe great primary stability, good acceleration/glide and a narrow catch, with lower secondary stability than an intermediate surfski but higher primary stability than most skis.

## What works
- Long production history - well proven, easy to find spare parts and used stock
- Best all-round balance of speed/stability/comfort in the range per multiple paddler accounts
- Full accessory/fitting parity with Nelo's racing K1s (adjustable footplate, rudder, seat)
- Wide layup choice from budget A1 fibreglass through to race-grade SCS

## Trade-offs
- Still a K1-style hull - no remounting if capsized, unlike a surfski
- Less secondary stability than an equivalent-width surfski such as an Epic V8
- Requires a protected flatwater venue; not a Gold Coast open-ocean boat

## Generations
- pre-2010s-present: The original/founding Viper fitness boat - referenced in a surfski.info thread from 2008, so this shape has been in continuous production for well over 15 years with only incremental layup/fitting updates.

## What paddlers say
- "The 'training' K1s/Danish Tour Rules Boats, such as the Nelo Viper 51, have great primary stability... nice acceleration and glide, great primary stability, a nice paddling position, and a narrow catch. It had less secondary stability than an intermediate ski, but more primary." - mckengmsurfski, surfski.info forum, 2017
- "I paddle a Nelo Viper 51, Stellar Apex Trainer, and a Vajda K1i Spirit. The Viper and the Apex T are both stable enough to paddle in rough conditions... if I had to choose one over a surf ski, I would go with a surf ski." - Cerca Trova, surfski.info forum, 2017
- "The build quality with Nelos that I've had is always really excellent. They are solid, are finished well, and just really hold up well." - paddling.com forum, 2008 thread on the Viper 51/55
