## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability rated 8 out of 10 (traced hull, medium confidence).
- Speed rated 8 out of 10.

Modelled from this hull's traced beam and depth at its design weight. Medium confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is based on a trace of this hull’s geometry. Qualitative context includes 3 paddler reports and 6 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Nelo rates this hull for paddlers from 75 kg to 90 kg.

## Suits
Confused/technical chop and moderate ocean swell where quick run-catching and maneuverability matter more than outright top-end flat-water speed; also fine on flat water for fitness paddling.

## Hull
Shorter (5.5m) hull with volume distributed further aft and a seat set slightly further forward than the 560, letting it pick up runs earlier and turn like a much shorter ski while still gliding well on the flat; reduced bow volume makes it push through waves rather than climb over them.

## What works
- Very comfortable, well-fitted cockpit; accommodates larger paddlers (reviewer 6'3"/92kg had room to spare)
- Catches runs early and easily, forgiving and confidence-inspiring for intermediate paddlers learning downwind
- Turns/carves on waves far more than typical race skis of similar length
- Adjustable foot brace/rudder pedal system praised as innovative
- Bow deflector effective at keeping spray off downwind

## Trade-offs
- Slower than the 560 on flat water / for advanced-elite racers chasing outright top speed
- Firm foot strap and rubber footplate stoppers felt mushy/uncomfortable to some paddlers before adjustment
- Less bow volume means it can bury the nose slightly under load in confused water
- Narrower stability margin than true beginner skis (540/520) despite marketing as high-level fun

## Generations
- 2017-2020: 1st-gen 550 launch (Summer 2017), positioned between the 540 and 560; WWR/SCS layups only.
- 2020-present: '550 2G' redesign (site refresh dated 2020), added AIR ultralight layup (8.5kg); dimensions/stability rating unchanged (5.5m x 0.48m, stability [rating omitted] on Nelo's own scale).

## What paddlers say
- "The Nelo 550 is a spectacular boat for a solid intermediate to advanced paddler... one quick and nimble machine... catches runs sooner and easier than an elite-level boat" - Nick, TC Surfski (tcsurfski.com review)
- "550's max waterline stability sits somewhere between the V10 Sport and the V10" - paraphrased forum consensus, surfski.info
- "Nelo 550 is a stability [rating omitted] and 560 is stability [rating omitted]" - paraphrased comment, Facebook group 'Downwind Surfski & Paddleboard'
