## Specifications
- Length: 5.4 m
- Beam: 50 cm
- Deck height: 33.5 cm (estimated)
- Layup weights: AIR 11 kg, SCS 11 kg, WWR 12.5 kg
- Usually paddled by: Paddlers in chop

## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability rated 9 out of 10 (traced hull, medium confidence).
- Speed rated 6 out of 10.

Modelled from this hull's traced beam and depth at its design weight. Medium confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is based on a trace of this hull’s geometry. Qualitative context includes 3 paddler reports and 4 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Estimated sweet spot 76–88 kg, broader estimated guide 61–91 kg. An estimate from hull dimensions, not the designer's intended weight.

## Suits
Moderate-to-strong downwind, ocean chop, open-water club paddling; the transitional step-up ski for a paddler outgrowing the 520 but not yet ready for a narrower advanced/elite ski like the 560 or 550.

## Hull
Low-volume hull with a distinctive concavity (bump-out) at the footwell, soft chine, and more rocker at bow and stern than the 510/520. Nelo describes the design as reducing wetted surface and moving the pivot point forward for sharper turning while lowering the seat for a lower centre of gravity.

## What works
- Superb, well-padded ergonomic seating that fits a wide range of paddler sizes
- Stability close to the 520 but noticeably more speed and glide
- Shorter length (5.4m) is easy to store, transport and car-top
- Quick to accelerate onto waves; reviewer says it exceeded speed expectations in races and downwind runs

## Trade-offs
- No side handles standard (must retrofit a kit or grip tape)
- Front end can move around in choppier downwind if foot pedals aren't evenly set - less forgiving of small rigging errors than the 510/520
- Fewer used listings than 510/520 given it's a newer, lower-volume model
- Sits between two other Nelo models (520/550), making it a confusing choice for some buyers

## Generations
- 2020-2023: Launched 2020 as a new model between the 520 and 550 - did not exist in earlier Nelo ranges. Debuted with the 2020 'new design' hull (concave footwell bump-out, soft chine, low-volume bow/stern with more rocker). Constructions SCS (11kg) and WWR (12.5kg).
- 2024-present (renamed '54'): Same 5.4m x 0.50m dimensions and Stability-6 rating, current catalog name '54'. Constructions AIR (11kg) and WWR (12.5kg). Adds a redesigned deeper-comfort seat and Venturi self-draining system.

## What paddlers say
- "Since the 540L straddles between the 520 and the 550, I expected it to be stable which it is... closer in stability to the 520 than the 550" - Wesley Echols, SurfSkiRacing.com Nelo 540L review
- "Very stable ski with better than expected speed and glide" - pros summary, SurfSkiRacing.com Nelo 540L review
- "Initial impressions that the new 520 as well as 540 are less stable than a V8P" - surfski.info thread 'New Nelo 520 and 540'
