## Specifications
- Length: 5.2 m
- Beam: 52 cm
- Deck height: 33.5 cm (estimated)
- Layup weights: AIR 11 kg, SCS 11 kg, WWR 12.5 kg
- Usually paddled by: New paddlers

## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability rated 9 out of 10 (traced hull, medium confidence).
- Speed rated 5 out of 10.

Modelled from this hull's traced beam and depth at its design weight. Medium confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is based on a trace of this hull’s geometry. Qualitative context includes 3 paddler reports and 4 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Nelo rates this hull for paddlers from 75 kg to 90 kg.

## Suits
General ocean paddling, moderate chop, learner-to-intermediate downwind, club/training use. Good all-rounder for someone who has outgrown the 510 but isn't ready for a narrower advanced ski.

## Hull
Mid-volume composite hull, narrower and lower-volume than the 510 but still wide enough for confident secondary stability. Concave footwell section (2020+ redesign) and lowered seat improve grip on the water and lower centre of gravity versus the original 520.

## What works
- Very stable yet noticeably faster and more manoeuvrable than the 510
- Comfortable, well-regarded ergonomic bucket, fits a wide range of paddler sizes (ML/L/XXL)
- Turns quickly, good in small-to-moderate ocean chop and downwind
- Moulded side handles make car-topping easy

## Trade-offs
- Less stable than the wider Epic V8 per direct forum comparisons
- No side handles on some earlier builds (owner has to retrofit grip tape/handle kit)
- Composite construction is less bombproof than the 510's poly hull
- Size-specific bucket (ML/L/XXL) narrows used-market options

## Generations
- 2016-2019 (1st gen): Original 520, straighter rocker line, composite layups included AIR (8.5kg), SCS (11kg), WWR (12.5kg); older catalog also referenced A1 (economy fibreglass/polyester) and E (marathon carbon/kevlar) layups site-wide, though 520 was typically sold in AIR/SCS/WWR.
- 2020-2023 (2nd gen 'new design'): Revised hull with added concavity at the footwell, lower seat height for a lower centre of gravity, moulded side handles. Nelo copy: easier to do downwind but also easy to paddle quickly on flat water. Constructions WWR (12.5kg) and SCS (11kg).
- 2024-present (renamed '52'): Same 5.2m x 0.52m dimensions and Stability-8 rating, now sold under the simplified '52' product name. Constructions AIR (11kg) and WWR (12.5kg).

## What paddlers say
- "The Nelo 520 is less stable than the narrower Epic V8 Pro. Having said that it is a very fun little ski and most paddlers can adapt to it quickly" - surfski.info thread 'Stability, Epic V8 vs Nelo 520 S'
- "Turns super-fast, stable, very stable. Feels like you are paddling a much narrower ski" - surfski.info feedback thread on the 520
- "The 520 proved to be an excellent novice ski, exceedingly stable and would fit practically everyone including the larger paddlers" - Wesley Echols, SurfSkiRacing.com
