## Specifications

- Usually paddled by: Confident ocean paddlers

## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability rated 6 out of 10 (traced hull, medium confidence).
- Speed rated 8 out of 10.

Modelled from this hull's traced beam and depth at its design weight. Medium confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is based on a trace of this hull’s geometry. Qualitative context includes 5 paddler reports and 5 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Estimated sweet spot 88–102 kg, broader estimated guide 72–106 kg. An estimate from hull dimensions, not the designer's intended weight.

## Suits
Ocean swell, downwind and flatwater for improving/advanced paddlers; the volume and 407mm seat point at taller and heavier riders, roughly 85kg and up, with the Sailfish covering the same footprint below that.

## Hull
Full-length, higher-volume advanced ocean hull sitting just above the Swordfish: 6315mm x 455mm, with a wide 407mm seat and a tall 360mm bow height - the most volume forward of any current Fennix single. Balanced rocker for swell and flatwater, a newly designed ergonomic seat, and an extended footwell that dealers single out as the reason it suits taller paddlers. Because it carries elite waterline length on an intermediate beam, the effective gain over a Swordfish is larger than the 20cm length difference suggests for a rider who sits high in the Swordfish.

## What works
- Elite waterline length on a forgiving 45.5cm beam - more speed than a Swordfish without stepping into an elite hull
- Highest volume and tallest bow of the current Fennix singles, so it suits big and tall paddlers other race skis pinch
- Extended footwell and 407mm seat are the roomiest in the range
- Dealer-nominated pathway boat for surf lifesaving paddlers moving into ocean racing

## Trade-offs
- Too lively for beginners despite the intermediate label
- Hybrid/Carbon only - no cheaper glass layup
- Still unreviewed independently, so every performance claim traces back to Fenn or its dealers
- New model with a thin used market, and it now overlaps its own sibling: under ~85kg the Sailfish covers the same footprint with less volume
- Launched into an already crowded Fenn lineup, which drew open scepticism from long-time owners

## Generations
- 2024-present: Announced on Fenn's Facebook page in late June 2024 alongside the Fennix Cuda. Positioned as 'a longer Ski which helps to bridge the gap between the Fennix SWORDFISH and the ELITE Skis' - roughly elite length on a Swordfish-plus beam. Offered in Hybrid and Carbon only. In late 2025 Fenn added the Fennix Sailfish, which shares the Spearfish's 6.3m x 45cm footprint but drops the seat to 400mm and the bow height from 360mm to 325mm for paddlers under 85kg - which by implication makes the Spearfish the higher-volume of the pair, aimed at the bigger paddler.

## What paddlers say
- Oceanpaddler describes the Spearfish as designed to 'bridge the gap between the renowned Fennix Swordfish and the elite-level skis... the perfect combination of speed, stability, and versatility' across ocean swell and flatwater (oceanpaddler.com)
- Ocean Surfskis (UK) pitches it at 'SLS paddlers with good beach knowledge looking to make the jump into ocean racing', highlighting the extended footwell for taller paddlers
- "The Spearfish is touted as a 'longer ski which helps to bridge the gap between the Fennix SWORDFISH and the Elite skis'... Innovation and the excitement of new designs aside, the burning question is, did Fenn really have to add new designs to what was already a very successful lineup of boats??" - Nordy announcing the launch, surfski.info thread 20578
- On the low-volume sibling, not this hull: "When the Spearfish and Sailfish are promoted as 'bridging the gap between the Swordfish and the elite boats' I wondered if that would mean that it was less stable than the Swordy but for me it was noticeably more stable with a really planted (opposite of twitchy?) feel even at a lower weight in full carbon" - CrabStick (73kg, Perth), three paddles on the Carbon Sailfish, surfski.info thread 20625
- No independent review or owner report of the Spearfish itself has been published as of August 2026 - unusual two years after launch, and worth weighing before buying unseen
