## Ratings (Surfski Index estimates)
- Stability band 5–8 out of 10 (editorial estimate, low confidence).
- Speed rated 7 out of 10.

Our estimate from published descriptions and reviews. Low confidence. Speed is our rating. Both are given at the hull's own design weight.

These ratings are Surfski Index estimates, worked out from published dimensions, traced hull shapes where we have them, and reviews. They are not supplied by the maker or timed on the water. How a ski feels depends on your weight, skill, set-up and the conditions, so use them to shortlist skis and paddle one before you buy. Method: https://surfskiindex.com/how-it-works/#limits

Evidence note: This band is a cautious editorial estimate; it is not backed by a hull trace. Qualitative context includes 1 paddler report and 4 linked sources.

## Paddler weight
Estimated sweet spot 90–105 kg, broader estimated guide 73–109 kg. An estimate from hull dimensions, not the designer's intended weight.

## Suits
Surf-lifesaving racing, break-through starts and shore-break surfing. Usable in confused chop; a poor choice for flatwater distance.

## Hull
A 5.8 m x 48 cm surf-racing hull with a high 38 cm deck and a shallow 17.5 cm bucket, built to Lifesaving South Africa’s spec-ski stipulations. Rocker and volume forward are there to punch through a break and stop the nose pearling on a steep wave rather than to hold a waterline. Double bullet bailers, single easy-adjust footwell, multiple neoprene handles.

## What works
- Genuinely spec-legal in the SLSA build, with the approval stamp
- Lighter ocean builds available off the same mould, down to 11 kg carbon
- Proven in South African Life Saving championships

## Trade-offs
- Spec rocker costs flatwater speed
- Shallow 17.5 cm bucket is a racing seat, not a distance one
- The 17.5 kg legal build is heavy to carry

## Generations
- 2023-2025: Surf X: spec surf-racing ski built to Lifesaving South Africa’s stipulations, sold at the 18 kg spec weight with an LSA approval stamp.
- late 2025-: Surf X Pro, with an SLSA-legal 17.5 kg build alongside lighter 15 kg glass and 11 kg carbon ocean builds.

## What paddlers say
- mickeyA (surfski.info forum, "Carbonology Sport Surf/SurfX for longer distances"): saw one at Gorge Downwind Champs, "It was the only spec ski design there, though it is not to specifications, way lighter than 39+ lb requirement... I think that ski did fine (beat me)." He adds the general caveat that "spec ski designs are not great for flat water, long distance. Might do fine in confused chop, if not too tippy, but really meant for surfing waves."
